Spinel is an increasingly popular gemstone. Its luster is high and it comes in a wide variety of colors like red, blue, purple, pink, and black. It has a high hardness (8 on the Mohs scale) and its chemical composition is very close to that of corundum (ruby and sapphire).
Since 2016, spinel has been added to peridot as the August birthstone.
