Ruby

Ruby is one of the four big gemstones along with diamond, emerald and sapphire. It belongs to the corundum family which also includes sapphires and fancy colored sapphires. All corundums have the same chemical composition and the same crystal system, however a tiny amount of "trace elements" is responsible for the color. Ruby owes its dark pink to bright red color to the presence of chromium (Cr). It is the absorption of light from these elements that produces the color we perceive.

When corundum is red it is called ruby, if it is blue it is called sapphire and when it has other colors like pink, yellow, green, etc. the term fancy colored sapphire is used.

Their durability is excellent and their luster is impressive. Deep red, saturated and homogeneous, these little cabochons are of exceptional quality! Ruby is also the birthstone for the month of July.
