Sapphire is one of the four large gemstones along with diamond, emerald and ruby. It belongs to the corundum family which also includes fancy colored rubies and sapphires. All corundums have the same chemical composition and the same crystal system, however a tiny amount of "trace elements" is responsible for the color.
Sapphire is also the birthstone for the month of September.
